Daily Practice

Daily practice has changed for me over the years. I used to practice every day to fix what I perceived as imperfection and weakness in my voice. Now I practice every day to learn to accept my voice, as it is, as good — not only worth accepting, but worth appreciating, and even sharing.

I don’t know how I made it as long as I did as a musician when every single note carried so much pressure and earned me so much self judgement.

But I’m glad I persisted. I haven’t arrived or anything. I still struggle to accept and not judge every note. But now I understand that the reason for practicing every day is to get better at THAT, not singing more accurately. I practice every day to restore a free and loving relationship within myself.

That, I believe, is the reason for any kind of practice.

Every discipline eventually comes down to a person sitting with their own self — unembellished, untuned, as-is — and deciding whether they are looking at a problem to be fixed, or a wonder to behold.
